Tank Endorsement
Course Author: Terry Mullins
In early 2022, the FMCSA established new Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations that define the minimum training standards for entry-level commercial drivers. These requirements apply to drivers who are obtaining a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading a Class B CDL to a Class A, or adding a school bus, passenger, or hazardous materials endorsement for the first time.
The ELDT Tank Endorsement Theory Instruction Curriculum is built to fulfill the theory instruction component of these requirements. To be considered compliant, the training must be assigned and delivered by a school or entity registered on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).
To satisfy the theory portion of the ELDT requirements, all of the mandatory modules must be completed with a minimum score of 80 percent.
Those modules are:
Inspecting Tank Vehicles — Covers the procedures and requirements for conducting a proper pre-trip and en-route inspection of tank vehicles, including checking for leaks, damage, and proper equipment function.
Driving Tank Vehicles — Covers the unique handling characteristics of tank vehicles, including the effects of liquid surge, high center of gravity, and proper braking and turning techniques.
Tank Vehicle Stability — Covers the factors that affect the stability of tank vehicles, including load distribution, vehicle speed, and road conditions, and the proper techniques for maintaining control.
Safe Tank Vehicle Operation — Covers safe operating practices specific to tank vehicles, including speed management, lane positioning, and managing the risks associated with liquid cargo.
Emergency Procedures for Tank Vehicles — Covers proper procedures and best practices for managing emergencies specific to tank vehicles, including actions to take in the event of a leak, spill, or rollover.
